Now this may seem a somewhat bizarre and rambling post considering my lack of posts on this site but I always like to state my hardened views on something when I feel it is confusing to others.
I am speaking of Homosexuals (ie- gays (male)/lesbians(female)/bi(doesn't care)). For simplicity sake I shall use 'gays' as the generic term because it's easier to type and more specific than bi.
Now, you may read this already thinking "Hey! He's against gay people."
Or, you could already be thinking "Yah! He's pro-gay."
Hmm... well... I suppose you could say I'm pro-gay in the fact that I know there is a gay lifestyle people follow and I believe that this is the hand they were dealt and that seem to live just fine with it. I am only against gay people when they are as non-accepting on me NOT being gay as they claim others are of them. That's just hypocritical (happens though).
I have found it increasingly strange over the years that so many gay people are surprised that I would care if they are gay or not. A few of my friends have 'come out' in various ways and I'm genuinely surprised they think I wouldn't accept them. And then I see why, it's because so many people don't accept them. I mean, they were my friend before they told me right? What changed? That they have a personal preference I don't share? So, I like bananas, some don't - should I then be shocked and give them grief for it? Or, perhaps something closer to the same picture. I like cats, but someone gives a revelation they hate cats (likes dogs perhaps) so would I then never talk to them again? Well, maybe not talk about cats.
I find gays to be just as entertaining and friendly as non-gays, I find no real reason to treat them any differently than I would expected to be treated by any other normal human being. I'm pretty much called a goth myself. Same could be said there. I have a lifestyle that differs from the norm and some people have issues with it. Why? I dunno.
I think people fear what they don't understand, the more 'alien' to them in concept the more they fear it. That tends to work for just about anything, politics, social background, skin color, clothing choice. However, aside from conceptual views of how we perceive others there really is nothing different tween any of us. Discrimination of all types have no real basis except for what we have learned/grasped/been exposed to as we grew up and became 'us'. We are a product of our environment when it comes to accepting people. I am a goth because that is who I am, I like what I wear, what I listen to, what I read, movies and TV I watch, knic-knacks I collect, games I play - they all contribute to me and what *I* like. i don't ask others to judge me based on those things, only to accept that this is me and who I am.
The same is true for gays, for people of different color, for those that like cats or dogs (or mice, rats, ferrets...etc). We are all WHO we are, the choice to be white, black, goth, gay, cat-lover, banana eater... was not ours to make. These were not our choices, it's just the collection of differing concepts of people and what they like. For these things, you either accept that part of them or choose not to and make other friends or contacts that are closer to what YOU like. That's fine.
Acceptance of people and WHO they are IS a choice YOU can make. That is a decision YOU have 100% control over. Once people get to this level of understanding of each other we will have a much better earth to live on.
